Here are some studies I did of the Nathan Fowkes environments.

EDIT:  Messed with brightness/contrast to increase value range like you suggested.

    These look good. Don't be afraid to put in the darkest dark areas as pure black or almost-black, to get a full range of contrast. You can also adjust the levels or brightness/contrast until they feel right.
